Cooking by Weight vs Volume
While baking is where precision matters most, getting cooking measurements right prevents oversalting, over-portioning pasta, or adding too little rice for your guests. Measuring by weight is also faster — tare the bowl, pour, done.
Grains and Legumes
Dry grains like rice, quinoa, and lentils expand significantly when cooked. Our converters show the dry weight per cup, which is what most recipes specify. A cup of dry rice (185g) yields roughly 3 cups of cooked rice.
Cheese and Dairy in Cooking
Shredded cheese is particularly variable — loosely packed vs firmly packed can change the weight by 30%. Our converters default to loosely packed (113g per cup for shredded cheddar), which is the typical assumption in US recipes.
